SOCIAL JUSTICE/SOCIAL ACTION
Social action calls us to go forth beyond the walls of the church buildings and be “salt and light” in our neighborhoods and communities. This Commission develops programs to focus on the work of the parish in reaching out to those in need and taking action on community issues. It assists in establishing structure and strategic planning.
The Social Action Commission strives to keep faith alive through understanding social teaching and active pro-life, rural life, social justice, and global solidarity issues. It promotes social action as a parish/community/world-wide responsibility within the four areas of pro life, rural life, social justice, and global solidarity
It Works Through Community Empowerment – with such activities as developing a Muscatine community social action organization; providing facts on immigration, death penalty, abortion; supporting post-abortion retreats (Rachel's Vineyard) etc.
It Works Through Legislative Advocacy - by attending the social Action Institute, e-mailing parishioners and others information received from the Iowa Catholic Conference - especially legislative alerts, scheduling a speaker from the ICC etc.
It Works Through Justice and Peace - joining the Immigration March on May 1, holding a Rural Life conference, encouraging participation in the Just Faith Program.
